RESEARCH In the second Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi, researches of academic staffs are supported by funds from DPP, DIKs, Dikti Voucher, University Research for Graduate Education (URGE), competitive grants, Basic Research, Riset Unggulan Terpadu (RUT), Riset Unggulan Kemitraan (RUK), RUT Internasional (RUTI), and other sources of funds from other institutions, either in Indonesia or outside Indonesia. Since monetary crisis occurred in the year of 1997/1998, the number of fund supports decreased significantly, either from the amount of fund or the number of institiutions involve. However, the last three years data, academic staff’s passion for research is still promising. In the year of 2003, faculty of engineering had 58 researches, in the year of 2004 it had 54 researches, and in the year of 2005 it had 58 researches.
In the last couple of years, research are using different pattern as the pervious years, i.e. integrating researches with education/ teaching activity and public services. For example, some of research topics are the effort in solving problems faced by the academic staffs when doing public services; and those researches are involving students during the process. Some students have also used those chances as media to start composing final project. Currently, faculty of engineering is trying to set up rules that allow student participation in research to be a replacement for similar/relevant subject in experiments activity. PUBLIC SERVICES Public Service or Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PPM) is carried out by academic staffs by using DIK-suplement funds. Considering the small amount of this fund, thus since the last couple of years, faculty of engineering have started to make an integrated public service with some study programs, and involve students in the implementation. The student involvement then becomes equal to KKN (Kuliah Kerja Nyata). From the perspective of academic staffs’ interests, this activity is called “PPM Terpadu” or integrated public services, while from student’ point of view, this activity is called KKN Tematik or themed KKN. The using of tematik or themed in KKN is because of this activity is oriented in the real society problems solving and the final result will help accelerate government’s effort in empowering community. Thus this activity is appropriate with Faculty of Engineering’s visions and missions, i.e. as moral power and agent of change. In the year of 2003 faculty of engineering conducted 31 themed KKN topic/ integrated public services, and mostly were focused in Sentolo, Kulonprogo, while in the year of 2004 there were 30 topics and mostly were focused in Sleman. And by the year of 2005 there were 29 topics and mostly were focused in Sleman. |
